home: whimsical spring mantel

The Spring mantel concept has been in my head for months. I'm so glad that I put my big girl pants on this past weekend and got this done!! Introducing the whimsical IHB Spring mantel:

First, the DIY pinwheels are hand-me-downs from my friend's engagement party and her sister made each one herself. I couldn't let her throw them away so I happily gave them a good home and another purpose in this world.

The boxes were born this weekend. With my new roommate - the miter saw - and the inspirational tutorial from Shanty 2 Chic, I easily created the boxes. Here's my recipe for three boxes at 2 feet long:
  • 1 - 2x4 "stud" at 8 feet long (I'm very new to the wood terms)
  • 2 - 1x6x4 whitewood boards
Here are the cutting instructions:

I'm not going to bore you with the details on how to make these so make sure you visit Shanty 2 Chic for complete instructions. I did stain the wood with Minwax Wood Finish in Ebony from Home Depot (as seen on this week's DIY frame).

To hold up the pinwheels, I picked up three styrofoam blocks from Dollar Tree and cut each one into 4 triangles blocks (1). There was no need to secure the styrofoam to the boxes - just sit them in there (2).

I used toothpicks to hold up the pinwheels like so:

Just a few tweaks here and there and they all went into the right place. This mantel needs nothing more! And later, I can repurpose the boxes for flowers, centerpieces, toiletries or as gifts!

a big thank you to Shanty 2 Chic for the box inspiration and to Pugly Pixel for the washi tape graphics.
